this is for cartooning, and stuff like that.

ok so i decided to share some things that I've learned about creating characters that are original…

this will be a process/ step by step "tutorial", and for it ill take you through development of this character i made up a while ago but never posted lol.

1. think about the character's personality.

personality is like
the most important thing ever

the never-posted character's personality was
-quiet /// antisocial
-blindly follows orders // not very bright
-good negotiator
-seems like a pushover but not afraid to defend himself
-likes fire

tips on personality:

- DONT make your character a mary sue. for a definition of a mary sue go here:
- also, dont make your characters have no good qualities. they should be bad at some things and good at other things.
- dont make your character generic!!!

yay!! u have a personality…but no design to go with it. its time for the fun part!!!!

2. actual design

this is really fun !!! you need to take your personality traits from before and apply them to the body shape//actual design.
my method using shapes. its so great. all pros use shapes to create characters. if you dont know what i mean, look here :'D :…
those are the basic forms of the main/supporting characters in the disney movie Aladdin. B) pros
shapes translate into personality !!!!1

circle: bubbly, thick, usually friendly, not bright,
square: strict, serious, egotistical, sometimes emotionless, intelligent
triangle: usually not good, wise, evil, if not evil then sly, quiet, or even cautious.

those are just opinions, and basic shapes. the shapes can be very complex. :)
another thing: shapes with sharp corners usually = serious
shapes with round edges/no edges = calm

for eyes:

round eyes: young, friendly, innocent
triangle eyes: evil, sly
square eyes: honestly idk

of course,, personality can't be limited to certain shapes. its totally up to you. this is just my personal preference / observations

these are just for bodies. shapes also can form body types!!!
i love shapes.

once you have character shapes down…it is time for coloring. now you have to remember your character's shape(s) and personality!!! when people look at your character they should know what they're like, they're personality, everything ;;o;.

darker colors: evil, quiet, mysterious, shy
lighter colors: happy, hyper, good,
neutral colors: lame (HAHAH JK NO). usually modest, calm, chill  B)

when picking colors they have to go together

really good.

to experiment with palettes i suggest going to this site here:

I do it a bit differently but I think this will be very helpful for others :3 Sometimes I come up with the design first and then create a personality that suits it (basically just the other way round) x3
One thing I do with characters is not just make one just evil or good, I like when you cant put them in a category. Some of my characters may appear evil because they kill people, but they may have a good soul, or their intentions are what meets their definition of good. It makes it interesting c:
